Course Overview
For existing SIA Security Officer licence holders who need to update to the current licence-linked qualification requirements.
This is a short, single-unit qualification. Topics covered include:
- How to conduct effective search procedures
- Factors that can make someone vulnerable, and a security officer's duty of care towards them
- Terror threats and the role of the security operative in the event of a threat
- Minimising risk to personal safety
- Actions to take in relation to global or critical incidents
Note: unlike the standard Security Officer qualification, this refresher does not offer any RPL unit or credit exemptions — the full unit must be completed by every learner. The one exception is narrower: a learner who has completed authorised ACT e-learning and ACT for Security within the last year can present that certificate to reduce the delivery time needed for the terror-threats content specifically — this is a content allowance, not a discount route.

Entry Requirements
- Be 18 years or older
- Hold a current, valid First Aid or Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, valid for at least 12 months from the course start date — this must be presented before training begins
- Have English or Welsh language skills — reading, writing, speaking and listening — equivalent to CEFR B2, ESOL Level 1, or Functional Skills Level 1 in English (or a recognised equivalent); this is assessed before training begins
- Be able to communicate effectively, including making calls to emergency services where required
- Note: First Aid training can be booked separately or as part of a combined package if you don't already hold a valid certificate.
Assessment Method
A short multiple-choice exam and a practical search and communications-device observation
- MCQ exam — 28 questions, 45 minutes, pass mark 71%
- Practical — observed search demonstration and observed use of communication devices, pass mark 100%; visually recorded, approx. 15 minutes per learner

- The SIA sets a minimum of 0.5 days for training, delivery and assessment
- Most content can be delivered virtually; the practical search demonstration must be delivered and assessed in person

- Compliance note: delivering any content via self-study requires notifying Highfield in advance and retaining evidence of self-study completion for 3 years.
